llms.txt Explained: What It Is and How to Write One (With Examples)

llms.txt is a Markdown file that helps AI models understand your site. Learn the format, see real examples for SaaS and docs, and generate your own in a minute.

· 6 min read

llms.txt is a proposed convention: a Markdown file served at /llms.txt that gives large language models a concise, curated overview of a website — what it is and which pages matter.

Why it exists

HTML pages are full of navigation, scripts and layout. LLMs have limited context windows. A short, clean Markdown summary is far easier for an assistant (or an agent) to use at answer time.

The format

The structure is simple:

  1. An # H1 with the project or product name (required).
  2. A > blockquote with a one-sentence summary.
  3. Optional paragraphs with more detail.
  4. ## H2 sections containing Markdown link lists: - [Title](url): note.
  5. An optional ## Optional section for less important links.

Example for a SaaS

# Acme Analytics
> Privacy-first web analytics for SaaS teams with revenue attribution.
## Key pages
- [Pricing](https://acme.com/pricing): Plans from $9/month
- [Docs](https://acme.com/docs): Install and API

Best practices

  • Lead with a definitional sentence. It's the line most likely to be quoted.
  • Include pricing and who it's for — the two things buyers ask most.
  • Link to Markdown versions of pages if you have them.
  • Keep it under a few hundred lines. Use llms-full.txt for the long version.
