Do Startup Directories Still Help SEO? What Actually Moves the Needle
Directory submissions are cheap backlinks — but not all are equal. How to pick directories that help rankings and AI visibility, and which to skip.
· 7 min read
Submitting to 100 directories won't make you rank by itself. But a handful of relevant, indexed directories with consistent information can help new domains get crawled, build initial authority and — increasingly — get corroborated by AI assistants.
What makes a directory worth it
- It's indexed. Search
site:directory.com. If Google doesn't index it, the link is worthless. - Listings are real pages with unique text, not a logo grid.
- It's topically relevant to your category.
- It sends some real traffic. Check whether listings show stats — AskableHQ publishes them openly.
Dofollow vs nofollow
Dofollow links pass ranking signals; nofollow links mostly don't (though they still help discovery and brand mentions). Many directories, including AskableHQ, give dofollow links in exchange for a badge — a fair trade that also proves the listing is legitimate.
Consistency is the hidden win
Use the same product name, one-line description and category everywhere. Consistent third-party descriptions make it much easier for AI assistants to describe you correctly.
Our recommended order
- Fix your own site first (run the audit).
- Launch on 2–3 platforms with permanent pages.
- Submit to 10–20 relevant, indexed directories.
- Earn real editorial links with content and data.
